Product Description

The Porsche Design Orfina Chronograph 7176 S is one of the most revolutionary sports watches in horological history. Designed in the 1970s by Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche—the creator of the legendary Porsche sports car—this timepiece forever changed watchmaking by introducing the world’s first mass-produced black PVD-coated steel case.

Discontent with the reflective steel and gold watches of the era, Butzi Porsche looked to the cockpit of sports cars for inspiration. He treated the watch as a precision instrument rather than jewelry. To ensure ultimate readability, he designed a matte black dial with high-contrast white markers and a bright orange chronograph hand, perfectly mimicking an automobile's dashboard gauges. For manufacturing, Porsche Design partnered with the Swiss brand Orfina, known for its robust military timepieces.

While early models used the Valjoux 7750, the definitive Reference 7176 S transitioned to the legendary Lemania 5100 automatic movement. This caliber was selected for its extreme resistance to high shock, vibration, and heavy G-forces. The Lemania 5100 also altered the watch's layout, placing the chronograph minutes counter on a sweeping central hand for instant tracking, alongside a 24-hour military indicator and day/date windows.

Thanks to its rugged durability and anti-reflective coating, the 7176 S quickly caught the attention of elite forces. In the late 1970s and 1980s, it became official military-issued gear for NATO pilots, the West German Air Force (Luftwaffe), and naval forces (Bundesmarine). On the track, Formula 1 World Champion Mario Andretti famously wore his own steel version during his racing career.

However, the watch achieved absolute pop-culture icon status on the wrist of Tom Cruise. In the 1986 cinematic blockbuster Top Gun, his character, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, wore the Orfina 7176 S. Proving its timeless appeal, Cruise wore the exact same vintage watch from his personal collection 36 years later in the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Today, the Porsche Design Orfina 7176 S is highly coveted on the vintage market as the blueprint for the modern tactical, "All-Black" wristwatch. Collectors actively seek out unpolished examples where the early PVD coating shows natural edge wear, and where the original Tritium lume has aged into a warm, creamy patina. It remains a masterclass in functional minimalism and a true piece of aviation history.
