Product Description

VINTAGE UNIVERSAL GENÈVE POLEROUTER DATE MICROTOR REF. 204610-1

The Universal Genève Polerouter Date Ref. 204610-1 is one of the defining creations of mid-century Swiss watchmaking — a watch born from aviation, technical innovation, and the early genius of Gerald Genta.

Originally developed in connection with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and its pioneering polar routes, the Polerouter was conceived to withstand the extreme conditions encountered during flights across the North Pole. Genta’s distinctive design, with its characteristic twisted lugs and beautifully balanced proportions, would go on to become one of the most recognizable designs in vintage horology.

This early Ref. 204610-1, dating to around 1962, is powered by Universal Genève’s celebrated Calibre 218-2 Microtor, an exceptionally sophisticated automatic movement for its era. The innovative micro-rotor architecture allowed the winding rotor to be integrated within the movement rather than positioned above it, resulting in a remarkably slim and elegant construction. The 218-2 is a 28-jewel automatic movement operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour and incorporating a practical date function.

The watch features the classic bombée stainless-steel case with sculpted twisted lugs, paired with the characteristic early Polerouter dial, applied Universal “U” logo, dauphine hands and date display at 3 o’clock. Reference 204610-1 is specifically documented with the early silver/white flat dial configuration and Cal. 218-2 micro-rotor movement.

More than simply a beautiful vintage watch, the Polerouter represents an important moment in horological history: the meeting of Gerald Genta’s design vision, Universal Genève’s pioneering micro-rotor technology, and the demanding world of commercial polar aviation.

A true collector’s watch, the Polerouter Date Ref. 204610-1 remains one of the most compelling expressions of Universal Genève’s golden era — elegant, technically innovative, and unmistakably timeless.
