Product Description

EBEL Tarawa Chronograph — A Sculptural Mechanical Masterpiece

The EBEL Tarawa Chronograph E9137J40 is one of those watches where the design and the mechanics are equally important. With its black dial, 41mm-class stainless-steel case and automatic Cal. 137 chronograph movement, the Tarawa represents a particularly fascinating chapter in Ebel’s mechanical watchmaking.

What makes the Tarawa immediately recognizable is its extraordinary case architecture. Instead of following the traditional flat or conventionally rounded form, the stainless-steel case has a distinctive wave-like, sculptural shape, creating flowing lines that continue through the bezel and the integrated structure of the watch. The sapphire crystal follows the same philosophy: its triple-curved, wave-like profile is not simply a protective element, but an essential part of the design. This combination gives the Tarawa a character that is exceptionally difficult to confuse with another chronograph. Contemporary and auction descriptions specifically note the curved tonneau construction and triple-domed sapphire crystal.

At the heart of the Tarawa is the Ebel Cal. 137, a remarkable automatic chronograph developed by Ebel in the 1990s with technical roots in the legendary Lemania 1340 architecture. Ebel spent years developing its proprietary automatic chronograph, with the first Cal. 137 appearing in 1995.

The movement is particularly interesting from a collector’s perspective because it represents a period when Ebel was determined to establish itself as a serious manufacturer of high-end mechanical chronographs. The Cal. 137 features automatic winding, a chronograph function, date indication and 27 jewels; examples of the Tarawa were also delivered as COSC-certified chronometers.

The movement’s connection to Lemania makes the story even more fascinating. The technical foundation goes back to the Lemania 1340, one of the important automatic chronograph designs of the 1970s, while Ebel’s development transformed that architecture into its own proprietary Cal. 137. The calibre later became significant enough that Ulysse Nardin acquired the rights to it in 2012.

The Tarawa is therefore much more than another automatic chronograph. Its sculpted steel case, unusual wave-like geometry and dramatically curved sapphire crystal give it an almost architectural character.

The black dial reinforces this effect, allowing the polished steel surfaces, Roman numerals, chronograph registers and distinctive hands to stand out clearly. The result is a watch that feels simultaneously elegant, technical and unmistakably early-2000s.

The EBEL Tarawa E9137 J40 is a fascinating combination of three elements: Ebel’s ambitious mechanical watchmaking, Lemania-derived chronograph engineering, and an exceptionally unconventional case design.

For collectors, that combination is precisely what makes the Tarawa so special — a genuine mechanical masterpiece with a design language that is difficult to find anywhere else.
