The Cartier Must de Cartier Tank Ref. 6 81006 represents one of the most important chapters in Cartier’s modern history. Born from the Must de Cartier concept of the late 1970s, it brought the unmistakable Tank design to a much wider audience at a time when traditional luxury watchmaking was being challenged by the quartz revolution.
Unlike Cartier’s traditional solid-gold Tanks, the 6 81006 uses a 925 sterling-silver case covered with gold — vermeil. This clever construction preserved the warmth and presence of gold while making the watch considerably more accessible. The reference is generally associated with a compact 23 × 30 mm case, quartz movement and mineral crystal.
Its rectangular proportions, Roman numerals, railway minute track and distinctive Golden sword-shaped hands preserve the visual language that made the Tank one of the most recognizable watches of the 20th century. Yet the Must version has a personality of its own: more relaxed, more playful and deeply connected to the design culture of the late 1970s and 1980s.
The 6 81006 is particularly interesting because surviving examples can be found with different dial colors and configurations, including white, burgundy, black and other decorative variations. Today, collectors increasingly appreciate these differences, with unusual and well-preserved dials commanding greater attention.
What makes this Tank special is not mechanical complexity. It is the combination of Cartier design, vermeil craftsmanship, quartz-era history and timeless proportions. The Must Tank helped transform Cartier from a maison associated primarily with the wealthy into a global luxury brand with a much broader clientele.
More than four decades later, the Ref. 6 81006 remains remarkably relevant. It is a watch from an era when Cartier chose accessibility without abandoning its identity — a small, elegant piece of history that proves a watch does not need to be complicated to become iconic.
