The 1970s Airain chronograph presented here is a striking example of French vintage watchmaking, combining a beautifully preserved green dial, a solid 39mm stainless-steel case, distinctive period hands, and a mechanical Valjoux 7734 chronograph movement.
Airain’s history goes back to 1934, when the brand was established by the Dodane family. The name became particularly associated with precision chronographs and aviation. During the 1950s and 1960s, Airain was among the manufacturers selected to produce Type 20 chronographs for the French military, alongside names such as Breguet and Dodane. These watches helped establish Airain’s identity as a maker closely connected to aviation and military timekeeping.
By the 1970s, Airain chronographs had evolved into a distinctly sporty aesthetic, with larger cases, expressive dials and reliable Swiss mechanical movements. Examples from this period equipped with the hand-wound Valjoux 7734 are documented in the vintage market, making this configuration an authentic representation of the era.
What makes this particular example especially compelling is its green dial. Combined with the 39mm stainless-steel case and period-correct hands, it has a character that is immediately recognizable as 1970s vintage. According to its current condition, every detail has been exceptionally preserved, giving the watch an almost-new, full-condition appearance.
The rarity is another important part of its appeal. Comparable Airain Valjoux 7734 chronographs from the 1970s are already uncommon, while this specific combination of a green dial, stainless-steel case and preserved original details is exceptionally difficult to locate today. An exact production figure for this configuration has not been established, so it is safer to describe it as an extremely rare surviving example rather than assign a specific production number.
With its aviation heritage, mechanical Valjoux 7734 movement, 39mm steel case and unusual green dial, this Airain represents a fascinating chapter in the history of independent French watchmaking — and a particularly distinctive piece for collectors of vintage chronographs.
